Instagram’s phone app has its own Download button for public Reels. It adds a watermark, creators can switch it off, and instagram.com on a Mac has no equivalent. If it works for you, use it, and AirDrop the file to your Mac (our guide to the free options walks through it). On the Mac itself you have five ways: a browser extension, an online saver, a screen recording, yt-dlp in a terminal, or a desktop app. They differ mainly in what you give up — your browsing data, your video quality, or your time.
The quality ceiling is fixed before you start. Instagram re-encodes every upload, so what it serves is already compressed, and no tool can recover detail that Instagram has thrown away. What a good tool can do is avoid adding a second round of compression on top. That is the real difference between the options below.

Browser extensions
Extension permissions are broad. Most need access to all your browsing activity to intercept the video stream. You're trusting an unknown developer with your session data.
Online download sites
Paste your URL, wait in a queue, get a re-compressed file. Your Instagram session URL passes through their server. Quality varies. Many show ads or have file-size limits.
Screen recording
Real-time capture only. Quality is capped at your display resolution. Audio sync can drift. You still have to trim the recording to remove the UI chrome around the video.

An MP4 at whatever resolution Instagram served, usually 1080p or lower for Reels, in the original 9:16 vertical frame. Audio included.
The caption, the original audio attribution, comments, or the creator’s handle burned into the file. If you plan to repost, you have to credit the creator yourself — no tool does that for you.
Before you repost anything. Saving a Reel for reference, commentary, criticism or research is ordinary use. Republishing someone else’s Reel as your own content is not, and Instagram’s own terms apply to you regardless of which tool you used. When in doubt, ask the creator — most say yes to a credited repost.

Open Instagram in your browser and navigate to the Reel you want to save. Copy the URL from the address bar — it looks like instagram.com/reel/ABC123/. You can also use the Share → Copy link option inside the Instagram app on your phone, then paste it to your Mac.
