How to Save an Instagram Reel to Your Mac (Free Ways First)
Instagram's own download button, your own Reels, and getting the file onto a Mac — plus what to do when the button is missing or the watermark is a problem.

The short answer: for most public Reels you do not need any extra tool. Instagram's phone app has its own Download option in the share menu. Tap it, and the Reel lands in your phone's camera roll; AirDrop it to your Mac and you are done. That is free and takes under a minute.
It stops working in four situations: the creator has switched downloads off, the account is private, you need the file without Instagram's watermark, or you only want part of the Reel. The rest of this guide covers those cases, and your own Reels, which have a separate and better route.
As of September 2026. Instagram moves these menus around often, so if a button is not where this guide says, look in the same menu under a slightly different name.
Option 1: Instagram's own Download button (free, phone only)
Instagram lets you download Reels from public accounts directly from the app.
- Open the Reel in the Instagram app on your iPhone or Android phone.
- Tap the Share (paper plane) icon.
- Tap Download. The Reel saves to your camera roll.
- On iPhone, open Photos, select the video, tap Share, and choose AirDrop → your Mac. It arrives in your Mac's Downloads folder.
What you get: an MP4 with an Instagram watermark and the creator's username burned into the video. That watermark is deliberate. It keeps the credit attached if the video is reposted, and you cannot switch it off.
Where it does not appear:
- The creator turned it off. Creators can disable downloads for all their Reels, or for a single Reel, under Settings → Privacy → Reels and Remix. If the option is missing from the share menu, this is almost always why.
- Private accounts. The button only exists for public accounts.
- instagram.com in a browser. The web version on your Mac has no download option. This is the main reason people end up searching for a Mac tool.
Use it when: you want to keep or share a Reel, and the watermark is fine or even preferable.
Option 2: Your own Reels (free, no watermark)
If you posted the Reel, you have better options than anyone else.
From your profile. Go to your profile, open the Reels tab, open the Reel, tap the ⋯ menu, and choose the save or download option. This saves your own Reel to your camera roll. AirDrop it to your Mac as in Option 1.
Before you post. On the editing screen, the download arrow at the top saves the finished Reel to your phone before you share it. Doing this every time is the simplest way to never need this guide again.
Everything at once. If you want an archive of all your Reels, request an export of your data from Accounts Center under "Download your information". Instagram emails you a link when the file is ready, which can take hours or days. It is the right tool for a backup and far too slow for one Reel.
If you recorded the Reel inside Instagram, check your camera roll first. Instagram only keeps a copy on your phone if the save option was enabled when you recorded it, so the version on Instagram's servers may be the only one that exists.
Option 3: When the free options do not work
This is where a tool on your Mac makes sense. The situations are specific:

The Mac tools fall into three groups, compared in full on our Instagram Reel downloader page:
- Online saver sites — paste a URL, get a file. No install, but your request goes through their server and the file is usually compressed again.
- yt-dlp — a free command-line tool that saves Instagram video without extra compression. Excellent if you are comfortable in Terminal.
- Klipprr — our app, so weigh this accordingly. You paste the Reel URL, optionally mark the part you want on a timeline, and export an MP4. It runs on your Mac with no third-party server in between, and it needs an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or newer). In our test on an M3 Pro Mac, a 26-second Reel exported in 17 seconds. The free plan adds its own watermark; paid plans do not.
One thing no tool can change: Instagram compresses every Reel when it is uploaded. Whatever tool you use, the best you can get is the version Instagram stores, not the creator's original file.
Reels, Stories and posts are not the same thing
The format decides what you can save and for how long.
Reels have a URL like instagram.com/reel/ABC123/. They stay up until the creator deletes them or makes the account private.
Stories disappear after 24 hours, and their links stop working when they expire. If you need a Story, save it while it is live. After that, nothing can retrieve it unless the creator added it to a Highlight.
Feed video posts have a URL like instagram.com/p/ABC123/. They behave like Reels for saving purposes. Older IGTV videos now live at these same post URLs.
Using what you save
Saving a Reel for yourself is one thing. Reposting it is another: the video belongs to the person who made it. Reposting without permission can get your post removed, and it can infringe their copyright. If you plan to publish it anywhere, ask the creator and credit them. Instagram's watermark exists to make that credit automatic.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no Download option when I tap Share on a Reel? Either the creator has switched downloads off for their Reels, or the account is private. Instagram only offers the button on public Reels where the creator allows it.
Can I remove the watermark from a Reel I downloaded with Instagram's button? Not cleanly, and you should not try on someone else's video: the watermark is how the creator keeps credit. If it is your own Reel, use the options in Option 2, which save it without one.
How do I download a Reel on a Mac without using my phone? The website has no download button, so you need a tool: an online saver site, yt-dlp in Terminal, or a Mac app such as Klipprr. Each is compared on our Instagram Reel downloader page.
Can I save a Reel after it has been deleted? No. Once it is gone from Instagram, no tool can get it back. If a Reel matters to you, save it when you find it rather than bookmarking it.
How do I save a Reel from a private account? Only the account owner can reliably do this, using Option 2. Instagram does not offer a download button on private Reels, and a URL alone will not work for someone who is not allowed to see the account.
Summary
Try Instagram's own Download button first: it is free and handles most public Reels. For your own Reels, save from your profile or before posting. You only need a Mac tool when the button is missing, the watermark is a problem for a video you have the right to use, or you want just part of the Reel.
